The 2014 search for Australia and New Zealand’s top apprentices has now begun, with entries for the annual prestigious Snap-on Tools Apprentice of the Year open.

The high profile award is in its sixth year, with hundreds of apprentices across heavy vehicle, marine, aviation and automotive trades expected to be vying for the top prize.

However the search in 2014 has a slightly different flavour from preceding years.

This year Snap-on Tools is deliberately seeking entries from apprentices within the Armed Forces, calling for entries from across the spectrum of Army Reserve right through toNaval

Snap-on Tools believing the sector is under-recognised for its contribution to the development of technical skills in younger Australians.

This year the 2014 awards will include a dedicated prize package for an armed forces apprentice who has excelled within their field – but it will only be awarded should the entries be of high enough calibre.

As part of Snap-on Tools’ commitment to unearthing and rewarding an apprentice from the armed forces, the Australian Army’s National Technical Training manager Wayne Allan, will be joining the judging panel.

The judging panel is made up of additional respected industry heavyweights including V8 Supercar Legend Todd Kelly, representatives from Auto Skills Australia, the Motor Traders Association and the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association.

The judges will be on the lookout for apprentices who have superior technical ability but are excelling in their knowledge, skills and ability, becoming well rounded and informed apprentices.

The overall winner will take home a prize package valued at up to $12,000, including a Snap-on Tools product pack featuring all the essentials to set an apprentice up for life, a Flat Black 40-inch Roll Cab to store their growing tool collection in, and sought-after accessories.

Snap-on Tools Apprentice of the Year also features the following award categories:

  • Apprentice of the Year Rising Star: for a new apprentice showing talent and promise.
  • Contribution to Armed Forces: for an apprentice who goes above and beyond to service our armed forces.

The competition is now open and closes 5pm August 29, 2014. Click here for more information and to apply.
