The Defence Materiel Organisation has entered into two separate agreements with Pacific Marine Batteries (PMB) for the provision of replacement batteries and technical support of batteries for the Collins submarines.

The acquisition contract, valued at more than $81 million, is for the provision of five Collins class submarine battery sets, while the Standing Offer will provide the DMO with a flexible seven-year mechanism to engage PMB at short notice for technical support of the battery sets.

PMB will continue to provide an Environmental Protection Authority approved storage facility for up to four battery sets (two in storage and two being ready for disposal).

They will also provide equipment capable of conditioning the cells in anticipation of installation in a submarine, as well as providing decommissioning and disposal services at the end of the useful life of each battery set.

"PMB has a very loyal and long-standing workforce manufacturing an extremely high-quality product for the Collins class submarine," PMB CEO Paul Merrow said.

"These new contracts demonstrate the DMO's commitment to local industry and its confidence in PMB's ability to manufacture products and support the capability.

"The breadth of these two contracts means that PMB provides a complete ‘cradle to grave' service to DMO for which PMB is acknowledged by DMO to be a supplier of strategic capability."
