NSW looks into ways of boosting defence industry

Interested individuals, groups and organisations are invited to make submissions online to a NSW parliamentary inquiry into opportunities to grow the state's defence industry, with submissions closing on 18 June 2017.

The Inquiry into the Defence Industry in NSW is being held by the Upper House’s State Development Committee to investigate opportunities to grow the defence industry to boost economic development.

 

The committee will look at ways to further encourage defence industry innovation, research and education, and workforce development

 

The inquiry, which references the NSW Defence and Industry Strategy, is focusing on terms of reference including:

  • maximising opportunities for NSW-based companies from the Department of Defence’s growing investment and exports in defence capability, in both acquisition and sustainment;
  • encouraging defence industry innovation, research and education including developing the future workforce;
  • identifying targets, programs and projects for defence spending in NSW;
  • maximising the economic benefits of locating defence force bases and defence industry in NSW regions;
  • how to establish and sustain defence supportive communities;
  • how to further enhance collaboration between the NSW Government and Commonwealth agencies; and
  • any other related matters.

The inquiry expects to hold public hearings in Sydney and regional NSW later this year.

Chair of the State Development Committee Greg Pearce said to support defence and generate greater investment and innovation it is important to consider how to create incentives to grow the defence industry.

“NSW is a leader in advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, aerospace, information and communication technology and many other areas directly relevant to the needs of Defence.

“The committee will look at ways to further encourage defence industry innovation, research and education, and workforce development,” he said.

“We will also consider how to maximise the economic benefits of locating defence force bases and defence industry in the regions, as well as ways to enhance collaboration between the NSW Government and Commonwealth agencies.

“The committee will consult extensively throughout the inquiry, including in regional areas. We encourage submissions from interested individuals, groups and organisations.”
