News Review: Rohde & Schwarz to supply AWD radios | ADM Oct 2010

Rohde and Schwarz Australia has been named preferred supplier for the suite of radio equipment to equip the RAN’s Hobart-class Air Warfare Destroyers (AWD).

The contract is expected to be worth around $30 million.

Modules for the future HMAS Hobart are currently under construction at three shipyards across the country – ASC in Adelaide, BAE Systems in Melbourne and Forgacs in Newcastle – and she is expected to be completed by 2014.

Greg Combet, the then-Minister for Defence Materiel and Science, said the choice of radios was an important step.

Radios are the core of the AWD communications solution, providing reliable long-range strategic and medium-range tactical communications between other ships, aircraft and land forces.
