Baulderstone Pty Ltd will be
appointed to manage the construction of new and refurbished sustainment
facilities in Sydney for the Royal Australian Navy’s new Air Warfare Destroyers and Landing
Helicopter Dock ships.
In announcing the decision, Parliamentary Secretary for Defence
Senator David Feeney said the $109.9
million Air Warfare Destroyer and $60.3 million Landing Helicopter Dock Ship
Sustainment Facility projects will provide berthing infrastructure, permanent
maintenance, and systems support facilities for the new ships at Garden Island,
and training facilities at Randwick Barracks and HMAS Watson.
“The capital investment from these projects will have economic
benefits in and around the Sydney region, with significant opportunities for
local industry during the construction period,” Senator Feeney said.
Construction is expected to commence in late July 2013 and be
completed by late 2015.
HMAS Canberra, the first of the new Landing Helicopter
Dock ships, is due for delivery in early 2014 with HMAS Hobart, the
first of the new Air Warfare Destroyers, due for delivery in early 2016.
