It is understood that the ADF's current fleet of MRH90 helicopters remains grounded nearly three months after an aircraft experienced a catastrophic engine failure near RAAF Edinburgh on April 20.

Flying operations are suspended while the investigation into the cause of the engine failure continues.

It is reported that an Aircraft Incident Investigation Team has been investigating the incident with support provided by DSTO, the engine manufacturer (Rolls-Royce/Turbomeca) and the aircraft manufacturers (NHI and Australian Aerospace).

The engine failure, pinpointed to the compressor, occurred during a deployment to Edinburgh of several aircraft and crews as part of the training and aircraft service development process.

Experts were checking whether similar problems had been encountered in other helicopters flying in European military fleets, or the British Apache attack helicopter, which uses the same British/French-built engine.

Australia is buying 46 of the European-designed, Australian-assembled MRH90 helicopters for the Army and Navy, with 11 so far accepted into service.
