The family of Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) will be built with the Category A general-purpose vehicle as its focus, a shift from earlier plans to base the JLTV on the heavier, less expeditionary Category B infantry carrier, according to the Army's product manager for the program.

The US Army product manager for JLTV Lt. Col. Wolfgang Petermann said the program began by basing seven mission configurations around the 15,000-pound Category B carrier and only one configuration for the 13,000-pound Category A vehicle.

But changing vertical-lift capabilities and the continued demand for a more expeditionary vehicle led to the decision to realign the program, and the Army has since assigned four mission scenarios to the Category A vehicle and three to the Category B.
