ATSA Defence Services (ATSA) has been recognised in the New South Wales Position Paper on Defence released this month.

ATSA was recognised for its contribution to the Acoustic Technologies and Systems Priority Industry Capabilities (PICs).

The PIC Innovation Program is an Australian Government initiative that is investing up to $45 million in grants over the period 2012–2020 into Australia’s defence industry to support innovative projects that will enhance or improve a PIC.

Other major local and international companies who have their primary development facilities in New South Wales were also named.

ATSA provides specialist acoustic capabilities focused on the integration of acoustic systems into Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV). It has developed significant experience in this capability through support of the Double Eagle Mk II Mine Disposal System operated by the Royal Australian Navy.

ATSA Chief Technology Officer, Darren Burrowes, said that the recognition was especially valuable for the team of local engineers who provided the capability for Defence.

“Our engineering team has developed valuable skills in working with both remotely controlled and autonomous underwater vehicles and integration of acoustic systems”, said Darren.

“We are currently working on a proposal to upgrade the sonar system fitted to the Double Eagle Mk II and look forward to developing a cost effective solution that meets local Defence needs.

“ATSA also has experience in supporting Wave Glider technology and are working on a number of projects for integration of acoustic sensors in the Wave Glider platform. Our experience in acoustic system integration extends to OEM training in Acoustic Doppler products, 2D and 3D sonars and Multi-Beam Echo Sounders”, Burrowes added.
