Following our announcement of the Women in Defence Awards 2022 finalists, ADM will be introducing each of our amazing finalists across the 10 categories in more detail. Today we are focusing on the finalists in Research & Development.
In this category, judges were looking for entries that exhibited an outstanding academic or research contribution to Defence-related matters. The finalists in this category demonstrated remarkable influences on the overall advancement of Defence-relevant science and technology, as well as a willingness to mentor or guide others, a record of overcoming personal challenges, or a commitment to advancing Defence-relevant R&D above and beyond their role.
Professor Vice Chancellor (Research) Andrea Bishop of Griffith University
Andrea has led a number of Defence-related activities in her 7 years as Professor Vice Chancellor (Research) at Griffith University. She was a major driving force behind formation of the Queensland Defence Science Alliance (QDSA), which brings together universities, government, and industry partners. She also established a Griffith University Defence Advisory Group and led the university’s applications for Defence Industry Security Program membership. It is anticipated that Griffith will be the first accredited QLD university. The judges were impressed by the substantial contribution Andrea has made to Defence R&D through her university leadership and her championing of the QDSA.
Lieutenant Commander Victoria Jnitova of Royal Australian Navy
Victoria is the 2022 Chief of the Defence Force Scholar and is now studying for her doctorate in resilience of training systems. In 2021, she maintained her position as an officer commanding a large school at HMAS Cerberus, while conducting her studies examining how to measure resilience attributes within training systems. Showcasing outstanding leadership and perseverance, Victoria successfully developed, piloted, and refined a survey for use as an ongoing training management tool. Her analysis has informed major reforms in the RAN, and her survey is now being trialled in the UK Joint Services Command and Staff College and other Defence colleges. Victoria is an exemplar to all officers to explore, expound, and excel continuously.
