One of the (sometimes overused) buzzwords about Australia’s ongoing defence modernisation efforts is the term “5th generation”, particularly in transforming the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) into a “5th generation air force”.

The new version of the aircraft, the A-29N, was revealed during the LAAD defence and security conference in Rio de Janeiro, and will include equipment and features to fulfill NATO's operational requirements.

New labours for Hercules

On 2 November last year Defence released a media statement confirming it will replace the Royal Australian Air Force’s fleet of 12 Lockheed Martin C-130J-30 Hercules with more of the same.

Persistent wide ocean surveillance

Australia’s Triton remotely piloted maritime surveillance program took a step closer to reality in September 2022 with the rollout of the first aircraft from Northrop Grumman’s facility in Palmdale California.

Hawk upgrade program underway

The first two of the RAAF’s 33 Hawk Mk.127 Lead-In Fighter Trainers (LIFTs) were upgraded with new engines in January 2023 and after the completion of test and evaluation activities, re-equipping the rest of the fleet will get underway in September.

21st Century aircrew training
