DEWC Services and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 20 July, partnering to tackle defence-focused research problems.

This collaboration between industry and academia will work to solve some of the challenges Defence faces in the domain of command, control, computers, communications, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and electronic warfare (C4ISREW).

Drafted to support the outcomes of the Defence Strategic Review (DSR), the MoU aims to put agreements in place to share skills and experience. The partnership between DEWC and UNSW will support taking research from an initial bright idea to a usable capability for Defence, as well as sustaining current and future capabilities.

“DEWC Services has a long history of success in supporting Defence on mission-critical projects in the fields of Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare,” said Allan Dundas, CEO of DEWC Services.

“UNSW are leaders in the critical area of digital engineering and all aspects related to the capability lifecycle, including design, acquisition and sustainment. Together we share a strong commitment to finding high-quality and innovative solutions to Defence problems.”

Associate Professor Dr Sondoss El Sawah was representing the UNSW Canberra, and said this partnership was an opportunity to transform the future of capability in Defence, through collaborative problem solving and working with stakeholders.

“The Capability Systems Centre has extensive research and education expertise in the area of digital engineering, which encompasses modern simulation, artificial intelligence, systems engineering, which is used for military, national security and defence applications,” she said.

The MoU signing took place just prior to the official launch of DEWC’s Canberra presence. Dr Aaron Matthews, DEWC Services principal EW consultant and Canberra research lead said that DEWC is currently recruiting for the new team, aiming to build something from the ground up with support from their headquarters in Adelaide.

“This research collaboration will give our company deeper insight into future technologies which will form the core of new defence capability, as we work alongside researchers who have the ability to look deeply into the technologies and capabilities of the future,” he said.
