Sydney-based engineering company Baker & Provan has completed installation of a large CNC machining centre.

The new large CNC machining centre will be highly efficient and will revolutionise the way medium- and large-sized components are machined for the rail, mining, defence and steel industries.

The new CNC machining centre has tables rated to 20 tonnes, commonly referred to as a pallet changer.

That is, while a work piece is being machined on one pallet, the next pallet is being readied for rapid changeover and re-commencement of machining.

This machine will be able to machine medium- and large-sized work pieces with greater efficiency for multiple work pieces.

The machine is able to work on five sides of a work piece with machining envelope up to 6.25m x 3.5m wide in a single setup.

This machine will also be able to provide significant efficiencies for medium-sized work pieces that have reasonable volume by jigging up multiple work pieces on each pallet, then unloading and loading multiple work pieces on the second pallet.

This large CNC machining centre was commissioned in August 2009, weighing in at 112 tonnes.

Along with its existing 12m CNC Floor Borer, with a six axis rotary table, this makes Baker & Provan one of the large and modern CNC machine shops in Australia.

The large machining centre sits well with Baker & Provan's existing floor borer with a bed rated to handle jobs up to 100 tonne, with a machining envelope of 12m long by 4m high.

The new machine will complement the company's existing comprehensive range of 12 CNC machines and heavy fabrication capability at their 6,800sqm facility.
