Field testing of a developmental secure optical anti-jam radio designed by Harris is due to begin at the end of 2010.

Harris has been experimenting with an electro-optical transceiver system as an adjunct to its AN/PRC-117G wideband multiband radio (in the ADF inventory), to provide a means of maintaining networked communications between convoy vehicles and for backhaul purposes when remote-control improvised explosive device (RCIED) jammers have to be used.

The new anti-jam radio uses infrared light-emitting diode (LED) technology adapted from a US Navy system for communication between ships during replenishment-at-sea operations under emission control conditions.
